Design Workshop Title: Rethink, React

Wei Hai, according to a UN research is one of the most ideal places
for human settlement, and one of the first to be classified as a
"green" city in China. We were there in summer when Wei Hai has all
its best to offer; sun, sea, mile-long beach, crystal blue sky and
endless greeneries. There were 22 enthusiastic participants ranging
from high-school graduates, graphic design students to practicing
designers and art teachers; all came from different part of the
country.

The workshop was conducted in a cozy beachfront café with huge glass
panels allowing great view of the seaside. It was against this
laid-back setting further soaked in the aroma of freshly brewed coffee
that we led the participants to "Rethink, React". As suggested by the title,
we asked them to rethink of their role in environmental issue and hence

react to it.Through cold hard facts

of global warming and successful case studies of sustainable design,
we aimed to make aware that designer has the power and responsibility
to instigate change for common good.

The participants were divided into 4 groups and given brief to create
ideas of sustainable design from found materials or waste in the
surrounding. The responses were mixed and interesting, some stick
strictly to the brief and went out to "get their hands dirty"
collecting empty bottles, discarded floats and swim suits. Others
chose to stay indoor cracking head in search for ideas from waste
management to recycle solution, one even worked on futuristic solution
for an imagined society with oxygen crisis!

The results were equally fascinating. Within such as short duration,
the participants have come out with some highly workable or believable
ideas, detailed sketches or prototypes and complimented with
Powerpoint presentation. Among some of the results were fashion
accessories created from recycled swimsuits and floats, products from
plastic bottles such as lifesaver and lamp, and other ideas on
sustainable lifestyle.

During the course of discussion a participant with graphic design
background yelled, "why are we doing product design?" and another
argued, "it's the idea that counts". This reminded us of one of our
initial goals of the workshop, i.e., to bring the participants out of
their comfort zone and explore new territory of design thinking and
solution. By looking at the way the participants trying to digest the
relatively unfamiliar facts and brief to create innovative design
solutions either related or non-related to their trained background,
we are confident that we have achieved our goal.

Of course a 3-days workshop is too brief to create a new breed of hero
designer who can save the world from all its problems. Nonetheless we
hoped that at the end the participants would not only bring back the
sun and the sea of Wei Hai, but some awareness of design profession
together with its social/ethical responsibilities.

胡智义Joseph Foo简历
毕业于美国旧金山艺术学院，在美国和新加坡从事过设计工作。他希望把亚洲的思维和理念通过平面设计表达出来。特别表达灵魂的艺术。最近的项目是“人与神”吸引了全球的设计师和艺术家。作品多次入选国际展览、出版和获奖。1996合作成立了三一设计顾问公司。他也在OneAcademy教授设计。现为马来西亚平面设计协会理事。多次他参加、策划组织国际展览和在设计院校讲学。作品在国际媒介出版，包括《艺术与设计》法国《步骤》杂志等。

safis萨菲斯（法国著名平面设计家）
巴黎设计学院教授。毕业于巴黎国立高等装饰美术学校。为法国交通部等做过平面设计。获得众多国际奖项。萨菲斯多次来华讲学和授课，积极促进中法设计文化交流。
